Women’s Soccer Makes History with Upset over No. 7 UTS in Home Opener

MCKENZIE, Tenn. -The Bethel Lady Wildcats played host to longtime rival UT Southern Tuesday night in Wildcat Stadium. The home opener marked the 31st meeting between the two programs.

Entering the match, Bethel had never beaten UTS. Dating back to when UTS was Martin Methodist, Bethel was 0-29-1 in the series.

That all changed Tuesday night as Bethel made history with a 2-nil victory.

Ainhoa Chirivella scored at the 56:52 mark and sent the Wildcat crowd into a frenzy. Elle Carson had the big assist for the Cats.

The Cats put icing on the cake with a goal by Kelly Nunes with 2:30 left in the contest. Alicia Perez was credited with the assist.

Bethel had an 11-7 margin in shots and an 8-2 advantage in shots on goal.

Bethel's Alicia Perez recorded the two Bethel saves.

Bethel remained undefeated at 3-0 while The Firehawks dropped to 2-1-1 on the young season.

Coach Misty Aird was ecstatic for her team and the Wildcat fans. "I could not be prouder of each and every one of my girls, coaches, and managers. Tonight, was truly a team effort!  We have been building this team for the last three years    Tonight's win was for every player that battled UT Southern and came up short in the past 17 years.  Thank you to my staff and the families and my own family for all the support."

Bethel returns to action Saturday traveling to Louisiana Christan with action beginning at 2 p.m.
