
Veldhuizen's Hat Trick Helps Bethel Take Down Brescia, 10-1
OWENSBORO, Ky. - Seven different Lady Wildcats found the back of the net in Owensboro on Thursday as Bethel took a 10-1 win over the Brescia Bearcats to remain undefeated on the season.
Freshman Johanna Veldhuizen posted three goals for the first scores of her Bethel career. Sophomore Elle Carson added two goals on the day and logged the first match with multiple goals in her collegiate career. Olivia Kavanagh-Spall, Kelly Nunes, Nathalie Rojas, Allie Chappell and Carla Cebollada each had one goal - the first for each player in the 2022 campaign. Nunes, Velduizen, Cebollada, Rojas and Sterre Van Bloemendaal each recorded one assist in the win.
Bethel (3-0) outshot Brescia 41-3 and had a 19-2 advantage in shots on goal. Alicia Perez had one save for the Lady Wildcats.
Olivia Kavanagh-Spall opened the scoring, finding the back of the net off an assist from Kelly Nunes in the sixth minute.
Elle Carson punched in her first goal of the day 14 minutes into the match off a pass from Johanna Veldhuizen to put the score at 2-0.
Kelly Nunes made it 3-0 with a goal at the 34-minute mark. That margin was Bethel's lead at intermission.
Elle Carson scored again for the first of seven Lady Wildcat goals in the second half at the 46-minute mark. The goal put Bethel ahead 4-0.
The Lady Wildcats expanded their lead to 7-0 by scoring three goals in just over three minutes. Nathalie Rojas in the 49th minute, Johanna Veldhuizen in the 50th minute and Veldhuizen again in the 52nd minute (assist by Carla Cebollada) were responsible for the Bethel scoring flurry.
Brescia's lone goal of the match came from Jada Saunders in the 61st minute.
Bethel answered as Allie Chappell scored off an assist from Sterre Van Bloemendaal at the 68-minute mark to give the Lady Wildcats an 8-1 advantage.
Carla Cebollada added a goal in the 86th minute to put Bethel ahead 9-1.
Johanna Veldhuizen capped the scoring in the final minute, netting her third goal of the match off an assist from Nathalie Rojas.
Coach Misty Aird said after the win, "It was a fun day and it was a team effort! We are very proud of Johanna Veldhuizen for getting her first hat trick of the season."
Bethel returns home to host LSU Alexandria on Monday, Sept. 5. Game time for the Labor Day match is 11 a.m. at Wildcat Stadium.
