Softball Split Doubleheader in Stunning Fashion at Williams Baptist
WALNUT RIDGE, Ark. – The Bethel Lady Wildcats played a non-conference doubleheader Saturday at Williams Baptist.
The Lady Wildcats dropped the first game 12-5 but won game two in dramatic fashion, 7-6.
Game one saw the Cats fall behind 3-0 after three innings. Bethels' Kalani Kuroda smashed a three-run homer in the fourth to tie the game. WBU scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to retake the lead at 5-3. The Lady Cats answered again with two runs in the fifth to tie the game. Maria Murdaugh had an RBI single and later scored on a Madison Carey RBI double. The Eagles scored a run in the bottom of the inning and led 6-5. WBU put the game away with a six-run sixth and won 12-5. The Eagles outhit Bethel 15-7. Bethel committed five errors in the game. Kaylie McKinley suffered the Wildcat loss.
WBU jumped ahead again in game two. Trailing 5-0 after three innings, the Lady Cats fought back as Kuroda hit another three-run homer to make it 5-3. Maria Murdaugh doubled in a run in the fifth to pull Bethel to within one run at 5-4. The Eagles scored a single run in the fifth to up their margin to 6-4. Hailey Cooner led off the top of the seventh with a double and later scored on WBU error. That set up the heroics off the bat of Murdaugh who hit a dramatic two-out two run homer to give Bethel a 7-6 lead. Kinsley Caruthers pitched out of a jam in the bottom of the seventh and went the distance for the win. The Cats were outhit 11-9. WBU committed three errors in the game. The victory snapped Bethel's five game losing streak.
Bethel is 7-13 on the season while WBU finished the day at 15-9.
The Lady Wildcat/ UT Southern doubleheader scheduled for Tuesday has been postponed and will be played in Pulaski April 23rd.
Bethel returns to action Friday hosting Campbellsville at 3 p.m. in a doubleheader. The teams play a twin bill on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m.
