Soccer Cats Move to MSC Semi-finals with Win over Georgetown

CAMPBELLSVILLE, Ky. – Coming off their regular season conference title the No. 1 seeded Bethel Wildcats turned their attention to their Mid-South Conference tournament quarterfinal meeting against the 9th seeded Georgetown Tigers Friday morning at Finley Stadium in Campbellsville, Kentucky.

The Wildcats moved to the tournament semi-finals with a 1-0 win over the Tigers. The Cats (11-0) will face the winner of the Cumberland University (4th seed) and Campbellsville (5th seed) Saturday at 12:30 CST. Bethel beat Campbellsville 2-1 in Campbellsville March 14. The Wildcats and Phoenix did not play during the regular season.

Alphonso Gooden accounted for the only goal in the very physical match. He scored on a penalty kick at the 52:14 mark of the game. It was Gooden's ninth goal of the season for the 1st team all-conference selection.

Bethel outshot the Tigers 15-5 and had a 5-2 margin in shots on goal. Bethel's Norberto Lima Vieira recorded. The Wildcats had eight corner kicks as compared to four by the Tigers.

Conference Coach of the Year, Malang Jarju commented on the tough match. "It was a very difficult match but champions always find ways to win. I thought we started well and created a few chances in the first 15 minutes but then we lost momentum and credit Georgetown as they built confidence and it bothered us I thought. We hope to fix the problems and come back strong tomorrow."
