Team Bright Defeats Team Springer in Spring Football Game

MCKENZIE, Tenn. – With Coach Michael Jasper overviewing the Annual Spring Football game Saturday at Wildcat Stadium it was assistant coaches Jay Bright and Chris Springer squaring off with split squads  with bragging rights on the line.

In the end it would be Coach Bright's team prevailing, winning 21-16.

With temperatures in the mid-sixties, the huge crowd of supporters were entertained from start to finish.

As they did many times last season, all-conference quarterback Joaquin Collazo III  and all-conference wide receiver J D Dixon teamed up for the first score of the game. Collazo hit Dixon on a 59-yard pass play to give the Bright team a 6-0 lead.  The point after by Andrew Welch at the 10:12 mark of the first quarter made it 7-0.  Welch hit a 39-yard field goal later in the quarter for the Springer squad. It  cut the Team Bright lead to 7-3 after one quarter of action.

Darian Burns picked off a pass in the first minute of the second quarter to give Team Bright a 14-3 margin. Burns' interception on a deflected pass was good for a 28 -yard return. Taylor Yancey connected on a 70-yard pass play to Myles Hymes two and half minutes later and Coach Springer's team made it 14-10.

Three minutes into the final quarter, Team Bright took a 21-10 lead when Collazo hit Tyrell Partee on a 47-yard touchdown pass.

Team Springer did not go quietly however. Ryan Scott capped off a 60-yard drive with a one yard touchdown run to make it 21-16. A two point conversion failed and Team Bright was able to run the clock out for the 21-16 victory.

Coach Jasper was pleased with the effort and day. "I'm honestly thrilled with the way our kids came out and competed. Obviously we aren't expecting to peak and really don't want to peak in March and April, but what we want is to develop and get our nucleus ready for next season. I feel like we did that.
The format of the game was a lot of fun. I wanted to allow these guys to play an actual game and for some coaches to get a feel of different roles. I'm certain Coach Springer and Coach Bright will be excellent head coaches some day and that was on full display this afternoon. Some younger coaches got to see what it was like to call a game so that was exciting to not only showcase the talent of our players but to highlight how great these coaches are."

Coach Jasper concluded, " A huge thank you to all the families, fans, and prospects in attendance as the energy was awesome and makes me really look forward to fall. Lastly I want to thank EVERYONE who has kept me lifted up during this tough time for me and my family. It has meant the world to me."
